I was recently interviewed by Sondermind, a franchise company that helps therapists with their private practice and getting the word out about our specialties. I appreciated the video series with me because I don’t often get a chance to really explain who I am and why I am so passionate about counseling. I’m often giving support and asking questions of my clients, so being on the other end of the couch and talking about myself even makes me feel a little (or a lot) vulnerable!
Here’s me explaining how I got into private practice:

Watching the videos, I even have to “peek” (get it???) through my fingers as everyone, not just the people I see in my office gets a little self-conscious at times, we’re all human! That said, I love being myself in my practice. Private practice allows me to do that completely. I am able to incorporate multiple methods of therapy, and I am able to see all sorts of ages and families, in addition to individual adults and adolescents.
Therapy has always been a part of my life throughout childhood and in my family. For the most part, it was a positive experience. And, the most positive experience was when my brother was having some trouble and had an amazing experience at a therapeutic school. His graduation was something I will never forget. Watching him in a new light, happy, active, with a ton of support in the room just brought me to tears. I knew this was my calling.
I’ve had a lot of encouragement along the way too (so important for a happy life and career!). My previous supervisors and coworkers have been so supportive. And, I couldn’t be happier to have the support of my family and friends. I’ve also learned along the way as to how to run the business side of my practice. My mentors and peers have been truly invaluable along the way.
One of the greatest moments of my private practice was with one of my very first clients. I worked with them for about a year, along with their parent (working with the family is so important for total healing), and seeing them after a year of pretty intense therapy, I was able to see the change and the “a-ha” moments.
And, their relationship with their parent was working better too. After we were done, I got a call about my client hearing just how wonderful they were doing. They were doing great at home and socially, and it was a long journey for this client and the family. I was proud to have helped.
Being in private practice, I offer a “get to know you” session where you can meet or have a call with me for 30 minutes to find out if I might be a good fit for what you are going through.
