I’ve been thinking a lot about the world around us, and the kind of space I want to create – both in my personal life and here at Peek Counseling. It’s become increasingly clear to me that simply saying I support certain values isn’t enough.
I want to actively live them, and that starts with being very clear about what those values are.
At the heart of it, I believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
I believe that we all deserve to feel safe, seen, heard, and valued, regardless of who we are, where we come from, or who we love.
This belief guides everything I do, and it’s why I’m so committed to creating a truly inclusive and affirming therapy practice.
Inclusive counseling practice
What does that mean in practice? It means I stand firmly in support of:
Transgender and Queer Rights:
Your identity is valid, and you deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. I’m committed to providing a safe and affirming space for all LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Women’s Rights:
I believe in gender equality and empowerment. I’m dedicated to supporting women in navigating the unique challenges they face.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):
I believe that a diverse and inclusive world is a better world. As Alicia Keys so beautifully put it, “DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift.” I couldn’t agree more. It’s a gift that enriches our lives, broadens our perspectives, and strengthens our communities.
Immigrant Rights:
I stand in solidarity with immigrants and refugees, and I’m committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for those who have come to this country seeking a better life.
Celebrating Our Differences:
I believe in honoring and celebrating the contributions of all marginalized communities, not just during designated months, but throughout the year. This includes Black History Month, Pride Month, Women’s History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and so many others.
Plus, Honoring Black History Month (Always)
I want to acknowledge the incredible strength, resilience, and contributions of Black individuals throughout history and in our present day. The fight for racial justice is far from over, and I’m committed to being a part of that ongoing struggle. Even though Black History Month is only officially honored in February, I would love to present the idea that it can be (and should be) celebrated year round.
For example, we must never forget the pioneers who laid the foundation for today’s mental health culture. One of those trailblazers was Bebe Moore Campbell, a powerful advocate for mental health awareness in the Black community. Campbell bravely shared her own family’s struggles with mental illness and tirelessly worked to destigmatize mental healthcare for Black individuals. Her book, 72 Hour Hold, and her advocacy were instrumental in bringing these crucial conversations into the open. She understood the unique barriers and cultural considerations that often prevent Black people from seeking help, and she dedicated her life to breaking down those barriers. Her work continues to inspire and impact the movement for mental health equity.
Built on the foundations of values
My values aren’t just words on a page; they’re the foundation of my therapeutic approach. I strive to create a space where you can bring your whole self, without fear of judgment or discrimination. I believe that healing happens best when we feel truly seen and accepted for who we are. My goal is to provide a therapeutic relationship built on trust, respect, and genuine understanding. I know that finding a therapist who truly “gets it” can be challenging. If you’re looking for a therapist who is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and affirming space, I’d love to talk to you.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I’m committed to continuing to learn, grow, and advocate for a more just and equitable world, both within and outside of the therapy room.
With warmth and solidarity,
Katie
